Our Maths Curriculum Intent

At Wednesbury Oak Academy, we recognise the importance of Maths across the curriculum and also as a subject in its own right.  We believe that Maths equips pupils with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand the world around them. Maths is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. We want children to make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. We intend for our pupils to be able to apply their mathematical knowledge to other subjects across the curriculum. We also intend for our pupils to apply their reading skills to the Maths curriculum so they are able to reason and problem solve independently.


In Maths, like in any other subject at Wednesbury Oak Academy, we aim to share our vision of high aspirations for all of our pupils through our high expectations. By setting these high expectations, our pupils are aware of the standards we expect in all lessons and learning opportunities.

This Vision Document is a working document.  It affects all Key Stages and will be reviewed on a regular basis with all staff in accordance with the SDP and in response to Government directives, where necessary.  


Our Curriculum Implementation

At Wednesbury Oak Academy, we use Power Maths from Reception to Year 6, to deliver lessons based on the mastery approach, originating in Singapore. Our use of Power Maths is also supplemented by additional challenges and problems to deepen children’s understanding of mathematical concepts. Maths is taught in mixed ability classes to enable all children to progress through the curriculum together and experience the same high expectations. Same day Maths interventions take place in every year group to ensure that gaps and misconceptions are addressed at the point of learning, allowing all children to continue with their maths journey in the following lesson.



At Wednesbury Oak Academy, we aim to develop, in all children, irrespective of background, race or gender.


  • Develop a positive attitude to mathematics in order that they may enjoy the subject and study it with confidence.
  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • Solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
