Reach Out And Read (ROAR) time

At Wednesbury Oak we understand the importance of reading and reading for pleasure.

Reading for pleasure opens up new worlds for children. It gives them the opportunity to use their imagination to explore new ideas, visit new places and meet new characters.

Reading for pleasure also improves children’s well-being and empathy. It helps them to understand their own identity, and gives them an insight into the world and the views of others. Research shows that reading for pleasure can be directly linked to children’s success throughout their time at school and even into adulthood. Therefore, all children have access to a range of reading books within their class library. Children are able to chose a 'ROAR' book to take home alongside their banded book. This is a book that they have chosen to read for pleasure: a book to share and enjoy in school and at home.

Classes also have dedicated reading for pleasure time, known as ROAR – Reach out and Read time. During this time, children and staff alike have the opportunity to read for pleasure from a variety of reading materials, including fiction and non-fiction books, reference books, newspaper articles as well as digital resources.

Additionally, every day, pupils enjoy Story Time, where a class book is shared together to further promote a love for reading.
